Nix Ethan Cohn Benjy Fisher Stevens Archaleta Travis Fimmel When Benjy tries to defend Travis, Barris hits Benjy hard on the head with his baton, leaving him twitching on the floor.
Guards throw Travis into an old boiler pipe overnight, attack remaining prisoners, and chain them up across the compound.
While locked in the dark boiler, Travis realizes that there is a hidden infrared camera watching him, even there, and as his despondence turns to anger he manages to get out.
He interrupts the rape of a prisoner by Chase, knocks him out, and sets the other prisoners free. Upon finding Benjy chained up and left to die, Travis leads an assault against the guards, chasing them through the building.
Even as the rest of the guards try to lift the shutters to escape, Barris tries to keep them in. The money is no longer his main concern; instead he is unwilling to let go of his power.
A vicious brawl ensues with the prisoners largely overwhelming the guards in sheer numbers. Barris, blaming Travis for causing the unrest, attempts to stab him, but the latter catches the blade with his hand.
Barris abruptly pulls away, shocked at his actions before he is tackled to the ground. Travis proceeds to brutally beat Barris, as the siren finally blares.
The red light comes on and the doors open, signaling the end of the experiment. The group emerges into bright sunshine and sit in stunned silence on the grass until a bus arrives.
They are shown being driven home on the bus; clean, dressed, and paid for their participation in the experiment. Nix asks Travis if he still believes that humans are higher in the chain of evolution than monkeys.
Travis responds that he does, because people have the ability to change. Audio news snippets suggest that Archaleta is being tried for manslaughter.
Travis meets his girlfriend in India. She notices that his knuckles are bruised, in contrast to the beginning of the film, when she noted his pristine knuckles, an indication that he was, at the time, incapable of violence.

Jun 26, A group of volunteers with no history of violence or criminality are arbitrarily assigned the roles of prisoners and guards in a psychological experiment that spirals dangerously out of control.
A remake of a German film, the most shocking aspect of The Experiment is the fact that it actually happened. Essentially showing how the civilised veneer of the human race can be so easily stripped away, these ordinary decent people become savage and twisted in a frighteningly short space of time when their only source of consequence to their actions is a faceless, anonymous but amoral authority figure.
The director places the audience firmly in the place of the observer which detaches you somewhat from the situation and removes some of its intensity, but thanks to great performances from Forest Whitaker and Adrien Brody it's a gut wrenching and thought provoking story that makes you wonder just how far we have really evolved from the beast within.
Feb 09, This movie can be easy to criticize, since the German version was ten times better. However, on its own, it's a pretty good film.
The pacing isn't that great, but it's not so bad that it comes off as stupid. There is definitely enough tension going on to keep the viewer interested, and the ending scenes are really awesome.
Plus, they made one of the good guys a Neo-Nazi. In this world of black and white PC characters, that takes balls. The one thing The Experiment had over its German counterpart is that it expanded upon the idea that humans aren't much different than the animals that walk on all fours.
The main character represents hope for a better future, which is probably the director playing it a bit safe. I'm certainly siding with the Nazi's views on the amorality of mankind on this one.
I tried not comparing this film to the German version, but it's hard considering what a masterpiece that film was. If you liked this movie, you owe it to yourself to see the German one.

Only stuck around to see how it ended - with an anticlimactic whimper. The original has got to be 10x better than this clumsy stab at drama.

Chase: I only got three rules: eat twat, smoke pot and smile a lot. Now, inside a controlled environment, two hand-picked groups of twenty inmates and six guards must follow a simple set of basic rules, while high-tech cameras monitor the entire makeshift jail.
However, devoid of their civil rights and their identities, the volunteers will soon find themselves dragged into a dangerous and volatile situation, as the sadistic warders begin to take extreme pleasure in enforcing their authority.
Under those circumstances, Travis, or the rebellious Prisoner 77, will have to explore his limits. How long can he last?
