This where it all started. Sam Raimi's short film to garner funding for The Evil Dead. But not only that, it also seems like a test run of ideas.
You have some that stick, like tree branches reaching for a woman, which later turned into the infamous tree rape scene.
You got the porch swing swaying back and forth as a warning sign. But there are some major distinctions. Ash was not yet created, nor did Raimi seem to know how to use Bruce Campbell to his….
The spiritual prequel to Evil Dead , Raimi's Within the Woods feels crude and chaotic, partially because of the awful image quality on youtube and in part because of Raimi's amateur capabilities.
Worth a watch as a Raimi completionist but otherwise nothing more than a minor piece of history that is better conveyed through the trilogy it inspired.
And the Raimi ranking rolls on, nearing it's stop. Review by David Lawrence 4. I'm not going to rate this, as the quality of the print I saw greatly diminished the viewing experience to the point that it was unclear what was happening in several scenes.
It has become trendy in certain circles to romanticise VHS, but it was the experience around the medium that people fondly remember rather than the inferior quality, subject to degradation over time and x-gen dubbing.
We really are lucky to have, for lots of films, high quality transfers in their correct aspect ratios in this age of DVD, Blu-Ray and HD digital copies.
But, alas, for some films like Within the Woods , you take what you can get. I would love to see this…. If you're interested in Raimi like I am I would definitely check it out but other than that I don't see a need to watch it.
Within the Woods is the film that funded The Evil Dead. If you like The Evil Dead, watch Within the Woods - it's a smaller budget but some of the shots were taken directly from it and implemented in The Evil Dead.
The Bad: Stupid, one-dimensional characters. Story isn't attention-grabbing or scary. Sound mixing is terrible. The Bottom Line: Raimi and friends shot this short in hopes of luring investors to produce a full-length version, which would go on to become the monumental cult classic, The Evil Dead.
Wish there was a much better copy of this around, but we most likely wouldn't see one. Worth checking out for the backstory and for Raimi completists.

It's very cool to see how the Evil Dead series got it's inspiration, and as it's own short film, it's still entertaining. Even at a young age, Raimi clearly has talent.
Definitely view this if you're an Evil Dead fan! Essentially an early rough prototype of the first Evil Dead film.
The camera work is dark, rough, amateurish, and honestly pretty shoddy which makes this a tough watch in , but you can see the origin of some of Raimi's great ideas that would be fleshed-out two years later when the actual film was released.
Kind of weird seeing Bruce Campbell become a deadite though and the temporary transformation in Evil Dead II doesn't really count.
Despite definitely suffering from the trappings of a low budget and a first-time filmmaker, this film is still fairly effective.
The audiovisual quality of the short is not good, but that's really just a matter of the VHS transfer. The acting isn't amazing, although it was funny to see Bruce Campbell play a nerd.
Sam Raimi's directorial acumen is evident here, with interesting cinematography and other filmmaking decisions. The makeup and gore effects are very good.
Bruce Campbell is believably made up into a deadite-lite and the kills were surprisingly violent, in a goody way. The film builds tension well and there are a few solid scares.
