The shading in the film is also very dark. This was the Deadpool of the 90's but with vampires. Too bad it was ahead of its time as comic book films still had the stigma of being solely designed for a rising geekdom.
Snipes makes an iconic Blade and the storyline, although a bit convoluted, is smart and edgy. One of the few flicks that give vampires the nasty respect they deserve.
Dorff is a terrific villain, creepy cool, it's sad his career stalled after this. Features some amazing martial arts and action sequences with outstanding practical effects for the technology of the time.
The sequel excels as profoundly as the third disappoints. However, the original is one of Marvel's best flicks. Blade succeeds in being a very fun movie that came out before vampires were reduced to laughing stocks of sparkling, misunderstood immortals that just want to get along.
The vampires in Blade are presented as they commonly were in the past; as ancient, calculating puppetmasters and anarchic individuals made even more so by the urban, rave focused culture of the late 90s, early s.
However, for all the great action sequences and just the high production values and interesting story, there are little things that do make this from being a full five star review.
Sometimes the animations look very dated, the story does stick exposition in clumsily, the female lead exists as little more than a deus ex machina and the actress isn't really all that much of an actress.
The story and climax also get pretty predictable and the ending fight is very disappointing, given all the build up to it.
However, Blade is still a classic from a time when vampires were creatures to be feared, not pitied. The movie is amazing among its kind.
It is internally consistent and its plot and characters are full. Unlike other movies that randomly throws sexuality scenes, here sexuality and gore actually improves the quality: they subtly show the primitive nature of vampires.
I remember when Blade first came out. It was so amazing with superb special effects for I thought it was going to go down as one of the best comic book movies of all time when I first saw it.
Fast forward 20 years and it didn't hold up quite as well as I'd hoped. But it's still very fun and watchable.
There is something about it that's kind of cheesy now. But in a fun way. And the special effect CGI stuff that was cutting edge in I very much enjoyed it when I watched it recently.

The entire subway scene starts and finishes with you still thinking the train running along the railway during the fight scene was completely real even being ALL special effects!
A strong adaptation to the Marvel comic Blade that gives it a more modern and down to earth feel and creating a dark element. I always found this to be better as a colorful and 80s looking Blade though may look good in Comics and if done right on film would be appealing, doing so would certainly ruin the overall dark feel of the environment around you.
Overall, I give credit to Blade for being a step in the right direction for Marvel in their time of multiple flopping live action films that came before it.
I only wish that Blade was picked up again to be incorporated into the MCU as a full blown episodic series like Daredevil or Luke Cage. Wesley Snipes and Blade have always been underrated.
This movie was funny, well crafted and has a great deal of heart. Blade and Snipes deserve more respect for not just breaking barriers, but creating a powerful narrative about American society in the s, Black Panther is fine, but Blade is the better movie.

But be warned this is an adult film even after the passage of time that still has enough gore to shock. As my review states this is an excellent blu-ray release.
The picture is incredible with the image looking very sharp and clean without losing any of the atmosphere. Most important for those of you in the UK this disc is Region Free - but, beware This is the USA release.
The Canadian release from a few years ago is region locked! The same applies to Blade 2 and Blade Trinity. Definitely worth the upgrade to blu-ray and still one of the best vampire movies ever!
Without this film comic book based movies like the Avengers wouldn't be where they are today Granted the little CGI that's in it hasn't aged well but that's easy to look past.
Plus it's a great reminder of what vampire movies were like before Twilight ruined their rep. Wesley Snipes stars and I mean stars in this exceptional film.

If you like vampires and martial arts you cannot go wrong with this film. A blade weilding vampire!! Sounds weird yes? But no this film works, it stars the brilliant Wesley Snipes as a good vampire, who wants rid the world of a whole bunch of bad ass vampires, one played by Stephen Dorff!!
He uses his machete like a knife in butter on the vamps and kicks thier butts!! There is a lot of gore from start to finish but there is an underlying plausable storyline, which grips you from start to finish.
