Per evitare problemi legali, Jamie su consiglio dell'avvocato Ned, decide di fare un accordo per una sorta di mantenimento per lei e le figlie, ma non possedendo tale denaro decide di andare a recuperare un forziere trovato durante una tentata fuga dalla Prigione di Ardsmuir, pieno di pietre preziose.
Tuttavia durante questa spedizione sull'isola Ian viene catturato da una nave portoghese e di lui si perdono le tracce. Nella ciurma vi sono anche Fergus, ormai cresciuto, e Marsali, la figlia maggiore di Laoghaire, che sono innamorati e vogliono la benedizione di Jamie per sposarsi.
Ora che sono tutti al sicuro comunque possono mettersi in viaggio per tornare a casa in Scozia, ma quando tutto sembra tranquillo, una tempesta si abbatte su di loro e la nave viene quasi completamente distrutta.
Tuttavia varie vicende tra cui l'attesa di un bambino da parte di Marsali e la proposta del governatore Tryon a Jamie di gestire una fetta del terreno della Colonia, fanno desistere la famiglia dal partire.
Mentre la coppia in dolce attesa decide di stabilirsi a Wilmington fino alla nascita del bambino, Claire e Jamie accompagnati dal giovane Ian si recano in visita alla tenuta "River Run" di zia Jocasta, sorella della defunta madre di Jamie, Hellen MacKenzie, dove pensano di fare una breve tappa prima di crearsi una nuova vita in America.
Solo quando leggendo un libro, il ragazzo scopre casualmente informazioni che attestano il ricongiungimento di Claire con Jamie nel passato, decide allora di telefonarle per dirglielo.
Qui i due finalmente si ricongiungono e svolgono la legatura delle mani come cerimonia prematrimoniale e fanno l'amore. L'indomani Roger, nonostante volesse tornare indietro, viene costretto da Bonnet a seguirlo in un'altra spedizione come suo marinaio.
Tutta la famiglia fa ritorno a Fraser's Ridge, dove Brianna racconta a Claire di Roger, ma inizialmente tiene segreta la violenza subita.
Ne segue una lite familiare furibonda. Tuttavia poco dopo il suo arrivo a River Run, appare evidente che per salvaguardare il buon nome della famiglia e del nascituro, la zia voglia trovare un marito alla ragazza.
Durante una cena Brianna fa anche la conoscenza di Lord John e l'indomani mattina, scoprendo di essere incastrata in un matrimonio combinato, Bree chiede all'ufficiale di sposarla, minacciandolo anche di rivelare quanto ha scoperto casualmente circa il suo orientamento sessuale.
Nonostante inizialmente l'uomo si rifiuti, poco dopo accorre in suo aiuto e annuncia un fittizio fidanzamento. Durante il trambusto, Fergus e Lord John, nemici di circostanza, non si intralciano a vicenda, anche per il bene di Bree, e ognuno lascia la prigione andando per la propria strada: Fergus fa scappare Murtagh, grazie all'aiuto di Marsali e John scorta via Bree.
Claire, Jamie ed il giovane Ian intanto sono sulle tracce di Roger e ben presto trovano il villaggio, ma dopo una battaglia vengono catturati; in questa occasione scoprono una leggenda su un altro viaggiatore.
La stagione mostra come Jamie e Claire costruiscono il Fraser's Ridge insieme alla loro numerosa famiglia e tutti i loro affittuari; Fergus e Marsali hanno intanto molti altri bambini.
Nel frattempo Roger e Brianna si sposano finalmente e cercano di adattarsi a un'epoca nella quale non si sentono pienamente a loro agio ma che capiranno essere davvero il luogo a cui appartengono.
Su di loro incombe anche l'ombra di Stephen Bonnet, il quale hanno scoperto essere sopravvissuto all'esplosione delle carceri.
Durante la stagione il Giovane Ian torna al Ridge dopo aver vissuto a lungo con gli indiani e sembra tormentato da qualcosa legato a una storia d'amore.

Jamie receives instructions to kill Murtagh, who is a fugitive. Jamie and Claire fight to retain their home at the Ridge as the American Revolutionary War looms on the horizon.
Brianna and Roger get married in a big ceremony at Fraser's Ridge. During the reception, Governor Tryon further pushes Jamie to hunt down Murtagh, forcing Jamie to gather up a militia and counteract the Regulators.
He struggles to balance keeping his godfather safe and fulfilling his duties to the British, especially under the eye of Lieutenant Knox, who is determined to find and kill Murtagh.
Despite Murtagh's pleas for Jocasta to return his love for her, she moves forward with her fourth marriage, choosing the safety and security of her plantation's future over his idealism.
Jamie's loyalties are pushed to the breaking point at the Battle of Alamance , when Roger's attempt to warn Murtagh fails and he is shot dead. Roger is captured and hanged by the British, but survives and is left traumatized by the experience.
Jamie is left devastated in the months following the Battle. Meanwhile, Roger and Bree's relationship is put to the test as there are signs of Steven Bonnet's reappearance, forcing Brianna to take matters into her own hands when she is captured by him.
Eventually, they decide to go back through the stones as it will be much safer for their son. Young Ian returns from his time with the Mohawk, learning the truth about Claire, Brianna, and Roger's origins when he confronts them with information passed to him by the Mohawk.
As Claire settles on Fraser's Ridge, she continues to subvert conventional medical practices by producing penicillin and covertly providing medical advice under a pseudonym; however, she finds that her subversive advice comes to backfire.
In the final episode, Claire is abducted and raped by Lionel Brown and his men but is subsequently rescued by Jamie, Roger and the earlier militia.
The season ends with Claire and Jamie looking out from the porch, determined to savor the peace before the trouble ahead.
