If you thought the art design was beautiful in Spirited Away and it is, of course , then you must see Howl's Moving Castle. The art design in this film is singular and absolutely breathtaking.
It looks not just realistic, but almost three-dimensional, and actually glows with a romantic depth I've not seen in any other film, either live-action or animated.
This film simply looks gorgeous. When it comes to the films of Miyazaki, I never watch the English dubbed versions. I've seen several of them and they are all pathetic garbage.
The English-speaking actors always get it wrong -- always. Therefore, I always go to the original, Japanese version and just turn on the subtitles.
Now, a word about the subtitles in these Prime versions of Miyazaki's films on Amazon. The pull-down menu for the sound doesn't actually say "subtitles"; it says, rather, "English CC", which is supposed to mean closed captioned.
However, it is not. It is supposed to say "subtitled" because this is what it is. I'm not complaining. Subtitles are always preferable to closed captioning, with all those annoying stage directions and such.
The problem is with Amazon, who, rather than stating that they are "subtitles", insists upon stating that they are English CC closed captioned.
Of course, this makes no sense, but what can we expect from Amazon. I'm just thankful they are actually subtitles.
What's more, they appear to be the original translation from the DVD I remember from several years ago. The film itself is an astonishing work of animation.
Everything just seems perfect, beautiful, with nothing out of place. And the weird twist of what happens to the lead character is at once funny and horrifying.
The characters, even the non-human ones, are all fleshed out perfectly. You genuinely care about them all, even "Calcifer", the little snot.

This time, he did not. But the source material is absolutely charming and Miyazaki works with it in his typically masterful way, bringing everything to vivid life.

She won more than a dozen influential literary awards, all well-deserved. For all these reasons, I have again broken my own rule and gave this film 5 stars.
If you have not seen it, you are missing a stunning film, one that will delight the eye and tug gently but firmly on your heart. I am not an anime fanatic but I do enjoy great animation coupled with a compelling story and this movie has both. I watched some clips on YT and then bought it knowing nothing about it beyond the trailer and a couple of fan uploads; I like to watch movies without knowing much about them in advance.
After I watched it I read the wikipedia page and learned the director added all of the war content on his own as a "protest" against the war in Iraq and that is the only issue I have with the movie.
In watching it the war scenes seemed disjointed and out of place, the war comes and then goes, Howl is dismayed about it then seems to forget all about it and becomes more worried about his hair color.
So in the 3 or 4 times I have watched it since I just skip thru those scenes. But this is a fabulous movie and is the highest grossing film in Japan's history.
Jean Simmons voices the female lead as an old woman and she is marvelous. Frankly, I love this movie and am so glad I bought it.

Howl's Moving Castle is so overflowing with original ideas, characters and visuals that a lesser film maker or studio would have tried to carve it up into three different movies.
At first, just let the film wash over you and enjoy every moment of artistry and music filled magical moments. The plot, which I will not go into here, is easy enough to understand once your brain recovers from the incredible sights and sounds that studio Ghibli has produced here.
At it's heart, the story is about a powerful young wizard Howl, who is rejecting authority and living on the outskirts of society in his moving castle.
He fears being obligated, he fears responsibility and he fears involvement. He can be like a surly teenager who only asks that the world leave him alone while he sorts himself out.
At the other end of the spectrum is Sophie, a mousy hat maker working in a small room in a hat shop until she becomes caught up in Howl's grand adventure.
Where Howl has large public display of magic power and might, Sophie is the one who displays the quiet and consistent kind of strength that Howl lacks.
As these two circle each other and learn the ins and outs about the curses and spells they are under, it becomes clear that his grand flights of fancy and chronic insecurities are a perfect match for the mousy girl with level head and unassuming strength of character.
This is not a story for viewers who insist on every loose thread being tied up and every back story explained.
In Miyazaki's world there are things that simply ARE and the viewer is expected to keep up. If you are like me and really just want to see something that you have never seen before, get Howl's Moving Castle on Blu Ray and make a special spot for it on your shelf.
There is absolute artistry here that can take your breath away. I view movies on a large HD projection system and I cannot remember a movie with more vivid colors and visuals that made me frequently pause the movie and simply stare at the screen in wonder like you are standing on the edge of a scenic overlook.

It is nothing like the original story, but I have to say, we love it all the same. The only unfortunate thing, was that the internal DVD holder was broken during delivery, so there were dangerous plastic chippings some very sharp floating about when I opened the DVD case.
This could have been avoided with better packaging. DVD was unscathed, and would still buy from again as well as recommend this gorgeous movie.

Sophie who works in her family shop creating hats, never sees herself as beautiful compared to her sister and her mother she feels dull. However, whilst trying to get to her sister's workplace to visit she is cornered and saved by Howl.
Unfortunately a witch who wants Howl's heart finds out and puts a spell on Sophie. Now old she can't stay where she is so she leaves and becomes a cleaning woman for Howl.
